• Depart 1300 hrs Iceland Air from Heathrow Flight FL451 arrive Keflavik 1500 hrs
• Activity: Blue Lagoon, sauna and steam rooms to refresh you after your journey
• To Reykjavik: your accommodation at the Hotel Cabin
• Evening meal is at the hotel
Day 2: 1 July “Golden Circle” • Þingvellir National Park - rifting between American & Eurasian plates
• Activity: Caving in a lava tube
• Geysir
• Gullfoss – awesome fault-guided waterfall and walk beside its gorge
• Overnight at Hotel Smáratúni
Day 3: 2 July “Volcano threat day (Heimaey)” • Fly to Vestmannaeyja Island from Bakki
• Visit Heimaey: Hazard Geography/Geology. This will involve taking several small aeroplanes from Bakki.(flight time 6 minutes)
• Coach from the airport to Eldfell volcano and examine the crater, the lava flows and the ash deposits. Then walk into the town, video of eruption and lunch, then coach to the airport
• Seljandafoss – a waterfall you can walk behind
• Skogarfoss – an awesome 60m+ waterfall
Alternative programme if weather prevents Heimaey visit:
• Landmannalaugar: walk through obsidian and rhyolite lavas, awesome colours and scenery
• Amazing landscape/waterfalls.
• Explosion craters.
• Around the Mýrdalsjökull icecap through 40 fords and rough terrain in the interior that’s only open in July and August
• On to the Farmhouse/Hotel Laki in Efri-Vik for BBQ in barn
Day 4 3 July “Water and Ice Day ” To the Ice Lagoon in SE Iceland
• See Europe’s highest cliff
• Brief stop at Skaftafell National Park Centre (for toilets if needed)
• Take coach if possible up to Farmstead above Skaftafell. Walk across promontory to view Svartifoss which flows spectacularly over black basaltic columns. Continue across mountain slopes to overlook awesome Skaftafell glacier
• Jökulsárlón Ice lagoon by 3.00 – awe-inspiring colours and shapes of icebergs: walk round the lagoon towards the ice sheet. (Where the James Bond Film ‘Die Another Day’ was made)
• Climb up Europe’s largest lateral moraine to view over glacier and lakes
• The sun then begins to set and it’s back to the Hotel Hvolsvöllur
Day 5 4 July “Glacier Day” • Depart early for Sólheimajökull glacier – walking on the glacier with activity company (www.adrenalin.is) and exploring the landscape of the glacier
• Skogarfoss – an awesome 60m+ waterfall if not seen before and time allows
• To Keflavik airport: flight FL454 departs at 1610 hrs arrives Heathrow 2010.
